WRITING TO ELECTED OFFICIALS

Your opinions are particularly important when an issue is timely – when a vote is expected,

for example.

Tips for your letter:

*   Prepare an outline.  By structuring your thoughts, it will be easier for you to complete a letter

with a clear message that is supported by substantial facts. Be sure to do your homework and then prepare your letter

*  State the purpose or main point of your letter in the first paragraph.  If you are writing,

regarding specific legislation, be sure to state the assigned bill number.

*   Be brief

*    Address only one issue at a time

*    Say why the issue matters to you

*    Give facts and background about the issue

*    State your reasons for opposing or supporting an issue

*    Be positive and constructive

*    If possible, suggest a solution

*    Send a copy to your local newspaper to help build support for the issue

*    Ask others who are concerned about the same issue to send letters also

*    You don’t need to be an expert

*    Addressing Letters and Envelopes:

          The Honorable (full name)

          State Senate or House of Representatives (U.S.  Senate or U.S. House of Representatives)

          State Capitol Address (Washington, DC Address)

          Dear Senator or Representative (Last Name):

DON’T HESITATE TO PICK UP THE PHONE

Tips for your call:

*    Say who you are and why you’re calling

*    Say why the issue matters to you

*    Give facts and background about the issue

*    State your reasons for opposing or supporting an issue

*    Be positive and constructive

*    If possible, suggest a solution

*    Follow up with a letter

MEETING WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS – INDIVIDUALLY OR AT A COMMUNITY MEETING

   A citizen visiting his or her elected officials is visibly identifying himself or herself as a constituent or a voter.  A visit will have great impact.  Your main objective is to establish a continuing dialogue with your elected officials

Tips for presentations at community meetings with officials:

*    Write out what you want to say in advance

*    Stand up when recognized

*    Go to the microphone so that all can hear what you have to say

*    Bring any materials (statistics, published materials, petitions) in hand-out form

*    Say why the issue matters to you

*    Give facts and background about the issue

*    State your reasons for opposing or supporting an issue

*    Be positive and constructive

*    If possible, suggest a solution

*    Close with a “Thank You” for their consideration
