Shaping Our
Summit is a program of the Meridian Institute. Shaping Our Summit was formed in Summit County in 1994 as a
result of the feeling expressed by many county residents that quality of life
and health was being compromised by rapid community growth. In creating a vision of what they wanted
Summit County to look like in the year 2015, the stakeholders designated three
key performance areas: maintaining the
environment and natural beauty of Summit County, energizing the citizenry to
become involved in the decisions impacting Summit County’s future, and
encouraging volunteerism and collaboration among groups already in existence
for the benefit of Summit County. The
three standing committees, or teams, that are actively working on these areas
are respectively: Environment, People,
and IN3 (Information, Insight & Involvement).
These teams meet monthly and are responsible
for many of Shaping Our Summit’s successes.
Summit County citizens are integrally involved in the planning and
implementation of our work because we believe that broad-based participation in community decisions leads to more effective
problem solving. Tapping the wealth of
information, skills and perspectives of citizens at the community level and
engaging them in finding solutions to the problems that affect their everyday
lives is a critical step in creating healthy and sustainable solutions.
