At 8000 ft above sea level and nestled between two spectacular mountain ranges, the Gore and the Williams Peak Ranges, the Blue River Valley and the Green Mountain Reservoir area is one of Colorado's best kept secrets. Only 30 to 40 minutes from Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Loveland and Copper Mountain ski resorts, the entire area offers a unique change of scene and pace from all the big resorts down the road.
The little community of Heeney, established in the late 1930's as an offshoot of the Dam construction. This sleepy little lakeside town comes to life the second weekend in June for the "world" renowned Heeney Tick Festival with parade, King & Queen, food, beer, games, auction, music - a fun mountain celebration and the major fund-raiser for the Lower Blue Volunteer Fire Dept.
There is not a lot of commercial development around the Green Mountain Reservoir but it has a lot to offer for hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, jet skiing. water skiing, ice fishing, 4 wheel drive roads, camping and awesome views. There is a small marina with boat rentals in the town of Heeney and a small store with food items, fishing supplies, etc. Especially popular in this area is the Cataract Lake area for hiking in the Eagle's Nest Wilderness area.
The area remains today much the same as it was over 50 years ago, with a beautiful hay meadow and grazing cattle across the county road. It is not uncommon to see, in the early morning and late afternoon hours, the elk grazing in the meadow.
